Dancing Outdoors like Nobody's Watching

This Sunday, May 23rd, The Monocle Eclectic Dance Company shall embrace the 85 degree sunny-day forecast and rehearse outdoors at The Monument in Logan Square. Although a few challenges have arisen given rainy days and generated power malfunctions, we continue progress forward and onward into our 55 minute live dance performance coming up in September.

While being outdoors at a public Chicago monument, our crew of nine are often outnumbered by fellow Chicago-ins. The sights, views, conversations, reactions, and intrigues bring a smile to my face. Although I must admit that our rehearsals are very focused, working choreography through spacing, timing, and dynamics- the life within the intersection of Kedzie Avenue, Milwaukee Avenue, and Logan Boulevard certainly is a universe within itself. The blend of our rehearsal and this place is thrilling, and the people are amazing.

Just two weeks ago, our group met the bravest 4 year old I've ever seen. His father had brought him to The Monument in jeans and long sleeves, with a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads and a skate board. Ladies and gentlemen, this kid was a pro his first time on the board! He was riding downhill alone, after his Dad helped him secure his starting stance, he road down the curving hill of pavement, and catapulted himself into the grass at the T of sidewalk at the bottom of the hill. All at The Monument were impressed. That same Sunday, one couple of on lookers were enjoying a picnic in the grass and approached one of our company members. They asked, "What are you guys rehearsing for?" Brittany explained our performances coming up in September and told them we'd be rehearsing at the monument on Sunday evenings until then, weather permitting. They responded, "Cool, we'll be back to watch, this is great." We officially have two fans!

Along with some great people, there have been some Chicago-ins not as thrilled with our presence, but we'll keep on keeping on because dance IS happening in Logan Square.

We've got the power!

Oh my, oh my, if you would've been in the neighborhood, more specifically in my alley in Logan Square just now. I had to rinse the motor oil off of my hands and go straight to my computer to tell this story...

Allow me for one moment to interrupt myself, this demands some back-round. I am not, never was, but probably one day will be a city girl (whom you simply can't take the country out of). My father's side of the family farmed, owns acres, horse ranches, riding lawn mowers, combines, barns, corn cribs, bean planters, four wheelers, snowmobiles, and many other-a-motorized fun machine. I am no stranger to riding in a combine, riding a horse, worming a fish hook, shooting a riffle, or getting my hands dirty. In fact, before I changed my major to Dance Performance at Illinois State, I was working towards an Agriculture Degree in Horticulture. I aced Agriculture-Engineering 105, and disassembled a lawn mower engine during one of our lab studies. Now that we’ve covered that ground, this story marks success, and does not pose the question “can a dancer operate machinery?” The answer is: why yes she can. Now onto the story that just took place in my back alley.

Our home has a sizable parking lot before the alley, in which we own one parking space. Due to the outdoor nature of our upcoming production, "the monument," I have spent quite a bit of time and research as of late on sound equipment, batteries, generators, watts, and voltage. After talking with the pros, I learned the only possible way The Monocle Eclectic can gain power to run the proper speakers needed to produce loud enough sound for a rock-tastic live street performance, I needed a 2000+ watt generator. So, after some complications, out-of-stock products, and one defective item later, today, I opened the box, took a deep breath, and got ready to get dirty.

I walked the 60 pound portable engine outside, properly funneled the SAE 10W-30 oil into the proper compartment, opened the top and poured unleaded gas into the fuel tank. After reading the start instructions about 4 times through and flirting with the machine a little bit, I prayed that I didn't blow anything up, and that the darn thing started up. I flicked on the circuit breaker, opened the fuel line, closed the choke and began to pull the start cord. Five attempts later no go... I'm pretty frustrated and covered in grease. On the sixth attempt the beauty purred right up, I let her run, opened the choke to run and she powered on for about 3 minutes while I did an improved happy dance all over the parking lot. I read the directions how to safely turn off the machine, did so, let her cool down, safely stored the generator in her new home, and rinsed my hands to sit right here and blog.

Engines still love me, I haven't lost my touch... and I still love the smell of gasoline. If I can start an engine and run a show off a generator in this great city of Chicago, film the performance and make something unique- today is a very good day my friends, a very good day.

Spring has sprung!

As cold as it can be in Chicago as we tip toe through April into May, the warm hearts of The Monocle Eclectic Dance Company are working outdoors and indoors to bring Chicago land something special and unique come September. We're sweeping up the monument on Kedzie Blvd. and Logan Blvd. every Sunday afternoon with rehearsals; the murmurs throughout our group are positive.

Artists in general share a genuine bond when beginning a new production or show. The dancers of our group continue to blend, mesh, and get to know one another as a family and a collective. Again, the vibe and atmosphere surrounding us is positive. Spring represents that rebirth, a beautifully enjoyed change of season this time of year for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere. I can't help but draw comparison to the rebirth of the Earth come Spring, with the new beginning of The Monocle Eclectic. Here are some thoughts from your friendly neighborhood dance company...

Adrianne said, "There is something about grass growing, flowers blooming, and warmer weather. It screams new beginnings to me and I love a new beginning!" Although most of us share Adrianne's optimism and adore this transition to warmer weather, Dane and myself can't help but relish in the opening of the Chicago Cubs baseball season, and the hopeful success of the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup playoffs! Both Julie and Christina separately enjoyed a little beach time get-away celebrating with family and the sun at the opening of the Spring season.

It is fantastic to have the windows open at home, maybe also have the windows rolled down in the car on your commute, or even to leave the house without a jacket! Wherever you are, and whatever Spring means to you- I hope you're enjoying it.

What is The Monocle Eclectic?

The Monocle Eclectic is a dance company, as I'm sure you'll gather from this site. Check out our mission, and our artists to learn more about the heart and soul of our group. This blog is meant to be an insider look into our goals and performances.

As the company has yet to celebrate its first birthday, one of The Monocle Eclectic's goals is to spread the word.

What is The Monocle Eclectic? We are one of Chicago's hot, new, up and coming contemporary dance companies.

How is The Monocle Eclectic different from other dance companies? Our movement tells a story, maybe not the same story to each audience member, but that is the beauty of art: drawing your own conclusion from one artists view and creation.

How did The Monocle Eclectic earn that name? This dance company creates art and dance, both in live performance and on film, through the lens and vision of its creator (or the monocle); the result of this creation results in a production with multiple facets, characters, and styles of dance (an eclectic collaboration of elements.)

When is The Monocle Eclectic's next performance?
