Mission

The Monocle Eclectic Dance Company is a theatre company that creates dance in alternative ways, with influences from multiple disciplines, and performs in unique Chicago venues, monuments, media, and stages both indoors and out.

Founded in 2009, this young and vivacious group of dancers and choreographers strives to create movement that is pertinent, innovative, and narrative. Narrative dance has a long running history within human development- at The Monocle Eclectic's productions you won't hear the performers speak a word, rather the story is laid before audience members within the movement and music, creating a unique marriage for the audience's senses. Choreographer and Artistic Director Kathryn Burrows draws the movement for her narrative expressions with influences from jazz, hip-hop, contemporary modern dance, ballet, salsa, martial arts, Pilates, the Alexander technique, and the beautiful world around us. The tone of this movement is seen through a lens that ranges from brilliant light to utter dark and all the grey in between. The Monocle Eclectic premiered in Dance Chicago in November in 2009. As technology continues to advance, so this group produces work in film and in live performance. Keep checking out our website for future performances and events!
"My dance reflects my life, and my life reflects my dance. The Monocle Eclectic's vision is to reach broad Chicago audiences by hosting free performances along with productions that speak loudly, offer an easy escape from everyday life, and inspire appreciation for the arts by celebrating the world in which we live." -Kathryn Burrows
